I am a writer, editor and early jazz dancer.

Such Rare Citings, book cover

My book, “Such Rare Citings: the prose poem in English Literature” (Fairleigh Dickinson UP, 2002), is the first full length treatment of its subject.

“Such Rare Citings” is available from Amazon. Quite a lot of it can be read for free, in fact, on Google Books.

I also created the first edition of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Wanderings of Cain” which includes all the fragments written towards that project. It is an electronic edition, published by Romantic Circles.

I have been a Guest Editor for SENTENCE (a journal of prose poetics) in the US and for Poetry International Web (UK edition). It was a true delight to work with contemporary British prose poets.

Recently, my writing has become more creative…

Charitable words:

“Date an Elephant” is an innovatiDate an Elephant gift packve scheme to raise funds for Elephant Family, an Asian Elephant conservation charity. A quirky slant on the usual “adopt” schemes, in which love letters are sent in return for a donation. “Date an Elephant” developed into a boxed product sold in Selfridges & Co  containing a dvd with an array of celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Joseph Fiennes and Sophie Dahl all waxing lyrical about their favourite elephant character. You can still visit the Elephant Dating Bureau and set up a date online.

Theatre (script):

“Journey Through Jazz” is a love story, a dance show and class in swing dancing. Staged at Artsdepot, London, in November 2009, it returned there by popular demand on 16 October 2010. Other venues are under discussion.

Spaces (dance)

Dance is a silent poetry of place and space. I have been dancing since the age of 3 and for the last seven years have studied authentic jazz dance. After writing all day and those voices need to sleep or find new faces to inhabit, I dance.

A teacher for the London Swing Dance Society, I specialize in early jazz steps, teaching classic routines such as the Shim Sham and Tranky Doo as well as my own, original choreographies.

As a member of the Sugarfoot Stompers, I have performed at the Cabinet War Rooms, the Cafe de Paris, Thames Festival, Big Dance and other London Festivals.

Words + Spaces

I always said my writing and dance would come together but now I know that words need spaces.
